Having not read any of the other books in this series, I was at a bit of a disadvantage when it came to some of the minor (at least in this book) characters. Chase explores the issues of modern adolescent sexuality, homophobia and friendship in a realistic way. She has a handle (as far as this out-of-the-loop adult can tell) on modern youth dialect and text messaging. I'm not sure how that will stand in the long-term but there's a lot to be said for writing for today's young adult audience.
