We Could Be Brothers (Scholastic Press-Nov 1, 2010)

We Could Brothers addresses the presence and lack of positive male leadership in the home, and how it dictates the way young African American men view themselves, each other, and the world around them.

For author award, I would like to nominate Paper Thin by Shelia Goss.
To quote one of the reviewers, "Ms. Goss does a wonderful job with this book of showing young women as they really are. She allows them to be selfish and loving, impatient and supportive and mostly, realistic. The reader is allowed to see how young people act when their lives change and how they deal with the economic struggles that hit their families. One of the more poignant messages deals with weight and self-esteem issues. We also get to see the young ladies deal with the timely and disturbing problem of violence among girlfriends and boyfriends." ~ Angelia Vernon Menchan, APOOO BOOKCLUB

It's probably a long shot but I suggest Bleeding Violet by Dia Reeves. It's so different and bizarrely beautiful, I love it :)

Also Saving Maddie by Varian Johnson. Awesome story about faith vs. secular, girls and guys.

I need to get reading on all these books! I've only read 8th Grade Superzero, One Crazy Summer and What Momma Left Me. All eabsolutely excellent.

I'd like to add two titles:

Yummy, the Last Days of a Southside Shorty, by G. Neri, in both the author and illustrator categories

Zora and Me, by Victoria Bond and T.R. Simon, in the author category.
